India's first geothermal power project will be set up at eastern Ladakh's Puga village. The village has been identified as the hotspot of geothermal energy in the country by the scientists.The project, known as Geothermal Field Development Project, is planned to be commissioned by the end of 2022.

India and Afghanistan on
February 9, 2021 signed a Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] for the
construction of the Lalandar (Shatoot) Dam in Kabul. The Shahtoot dam is
proposed to be constructed on the Kabul river basin, which is one of
the five river basins of Afghanistan.

The Indian National
Congress named party veteran Mallikarjun Kharge as the leader of
opposition in the Rajya Sabha. The post will fall vacant with the

The Central Reserve Police Force
(CRPF) inducted 34 women commandos into its specialised Commando
Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit for the first time on
February 7, 2021. The CoBRA unit is skilled in guerrilla tactics and
jungle warfare and is deployed in Naxal-affected areas. It was raised in
2009.

Indian short film 'Bittu' has been
shortlisted for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Live-Action Category.
Bittu has emerged amongst the Top 10 candidates after the first round of
voting, competing amongst 174 films from across the globe. The film
will now be subjected to the votes of members of the short films and
animation branch to determine the shortlists and the nominees.

Finance Minister of Nigeria, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala is poised to become
the next Chief of the World Trade Organisation after US President Joe
Biden’s administration gave her its complete support on February 5,
2021.

Australia's Robert Irwin has
been awarded the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the
Year People's Choice Award 2020 for his drone image of Bushfire in
northern Australia. Robert Irwin's photo titled 'Bushfire', shows a

other.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan on February 9, 2021 announced an ambitious 10-year space program
that includes 2023 Moon mission, developing internationally viable
satellite systems and sending Turkish astronauts into space.

South Korea plans to build an
8.2GW offshore wind farm in Jeonnam province by 2030. This was announced
by the Moon Jae-in administration on February 5, 2021 after the signing
of a $43 billion deal.
10. (a) UAE
The United Arab Emirates' space probe
entered the orbit of Mars on February 9, 2021, marking a historic
moment for the Arab world. UAE's space probe called Al Amal, which means
'Hope' in Arabic has finally reached its destination after a 7-month
long journey. This is the Arab world's first interplanetary mission.

Ishant Sharma became the third Indian pacer to take 300 wickets in the longest format of the game on February 8, 2021. Ishant reached the milestone during his 98th test match, after taking the wicket of Dan Lawrence on the fourth day of the ongoing India vs England test match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
12. (a) Koozhangal
Koozhangal (Pebbles) became the first Tamil film to win the coveted Tiger Award at the 50th Rotterdam Film Festival 2021 on February 7, 2021. The film has been directed by debutant director Vinothraj PS and stars newcomers Karuththadaiyan and Chella Pandi in the lead roles.
